What's is Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism?
The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) puts a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon-intensive goods entering the EU, and encourages cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries.
CBAM is set to expand downstream, from raw materials into finished goods containing steel or aluminium. The EU Commission, Council, and Parliament are negotiating a scope covering anywhere from 180 to 457 manufactured products: machinery, vehicle components, appliances, and industrial equipment, which would apply from 2028.
North American manufacturers and exporters shipping these goods into the EU may need product-level embedded-emissions data for the first time.
